GATHERED IMPRESSIONS

Botanical Ceramic Plates

Sunday August 23

1-4 pm

with Crystal Nykoluk (Earthshaper)

and Karin Kliewer (Swallowtail Farmstead)

There are moments in the garden you wish you could keep forever. You see a carrot top growing longer, the lace of dill gone to flower, or a stem catching the afternoon light. In this workshop, we'll preserve a fleeting piece of Manitoba summer in clay.

We'll begin with a guided walk through Swallowtail Farmstead with Karin, exploring her farm's ecological flower and vegetable gardens while learning about the plants that thrive in Manitoba. Along the way, you'll gather the leaves, flowers, and seed heads that catch your eye. Whether you're drawn to delicate textures, striking silhouettes, or a bloom that stirs a memory, every collection gathered will be unique.

As we gather, we'll do so thoughtfully. We only want to take what the garden can generously give. This is an opportunity to slow down, notice the abundance around us, and leave the plants to continue growing and nourishing the farm long after we've gone.

With our gathered botanicals, we'll return to the outdoor summer studio where ceramic artist Crystal will guide you through rolling and compressing a slab of clay, pressing your plants into its surface, and shaping it into an organic plate. You'll finish your piece by adding soft washes of colour that settle into every vein and petal, bringing the impressions quietly back to life.

Two weeks later, after your pieces have been fired in the pottery kiln, you'll hold something that can never be made again. A permanent memory of a Manitoba afternoon on the farm.

Sunday August 23 | 1:00–4:00 pm

$90 per person

A Few Notes

  • If the weather is exceptionally rainy or windy, the workshop will be postponed until September 6th
  • The Swallowtail Farm Stand will be stocked and open for the workshop if you'd like to browse seasonal flowers, produce, and other farm offerings (highly recommended!)
  • Finished pieces can be picked up at Swallowtail Farmstead starting September 6th, with a Winnipeg pickup location also available for city participants.

Please note: This is an outdoor class, so please dress to be outdoors.

We are grateful for all those who have saved seeds, tended land, and passed on plant knowledge before us. We live on Treaty 1 territory, traditional territory of the Anishanaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and the National Homeland of the Red River Metis.
As a small act of reparation a portion of our farm proceeds is donated to Indigenous-led food security programs in Manitoba.

For all Farm Store orders you will receive an email with specific pick-up / delivery details.
