About: Common Mullein grows well in most soil conditions. The first year plants grow a basal rosette of wide grey-green soft velvety leaves. The second year plants shoot up a tall flowering stalk or spike, with dozens of tiny delicate yellow flowers. Traditionally used as a medicinal herb, the leaves for lung conditions and bronchitis, the flowers to make an earache oil. Mullein is also a great pollinator plant, attracting beneficial insects, hummingbirds and butterflies.
Mullein will spread by self seeding readily with it's many tiny seeds. To avoid self-seeding, harvest the flowering stalk by cutting it completely before the flowers go to seed. Mullein plants are large, with leaf spread of about 1-3 feet wide and stalk height 3-7 feet tall. Harvest leaves and flowers on dry sunny days. Plant mullein from seed in early spring outdoors, or plant seeds 2-4 weeks early indoors for a head start. Seeds take aprox 14 days to germination, but have slightly unpredictable varied germination time so be patient.
Organically grown here at Swallowtail Farmstead.
