About: Motherwort is a herbaceous perennial that is hardy in zones 3-8. It has deeply divided leaves, dark green with silvery-grey undersides. The stems and dried seed pods are hairy and prickly.
Medicinal uses: Motherwort has a strong bitter flavour, and when used as a bitter it is tonifying for the liver and digestive system. It has a long history of being used to strengthen the heart and circulatory system. Used in tinctures and teas to reduce nervous tension (nervine), and reduce cramping, postpartum and menopausal changes.
Growing tips: Motherwort needs cold stratification to germinate. To help germinate, wrap seeds into damp paper towel and place in ziploc bag. Store in freezer for several weeks before planting.
Growth habit:
Motherwort will actively self-seed so make sure to plant where you don't mind it spreading.
Other:
Pollinators love Motherwort!
