Building a Cob Oven
POSTPONED UNTIL 2025
Cob is a natural building material used around the world, to build bake ovens, benches, walls, and even entire homes. Cob is a mixture made of clay-sand-straw, can be entirely locally sourced and even biodegradeable when you are finished. It is a user-friendly, intuitive building material, that does not need special equipment or tools to work with.
In this 2-part workshop, we will begin by talking about our building process. We'll go through the stages of building that you would need to create your own oven (including building permits and bylaws, oven designs, making cob mixtures, foundations, test bricks, hearths), and also how to fire and bake with the oven. Workshop participants will get the chance to try working with cob and help with the cob oven build here at Swallowtail Farmstead.
Take home lots of information, resources and a hand-out of information for getting started on your own cob oven!
Part 2 - optional, come back to help us finish our cob oven here at Swallowtail Farmstead (date to be determined)
At time of registration, please let us know if you are bringing a child along. 1 adult + 1 child can register together for one fee.
Please dress to be outdoors. This is an OUTDOOR workshop so dress for the weather (ideal is outer wear that you don't mind getting a bit muddy/dusty)
